BEX ED101: 10 TIPS FOR CREATING A BOMB ASS LOGO!

For years, I have preached and preached and screamed from the top of my lungs about PROPER logo design!!! Even though many still want it their way, I still never hesitate to inform them that it’s the wrong way! Here are my LOGO RULES that I enforce with every project I take on!

  1. LESS IS MORE!

Its never a good idea to have a busy logo. People need to be able to see it, understand it, and remember it. Plus, busy in “logo world” often is perceived as cheap and low quality. Simple is usually luxury and refined.

  2. COLORS HAVE MEANINGS!

If you have a health food store, your logo should not be pink and purple. If you have a cupcake shop, your logo should not be brown and green. Each color gives you a feel and has a meaning. I don’t care if red is your favorite color, if you are mowing lawns, you might want to consider not using it for this company! If you’re unsure of color meanings, click here.

  3. MUST WORK AS ONE COLOR!

This is self explanatory! If your logo does not work as one color, you might have a trash logo. This is important for watermarking and screen printing if you decide to get shirts mass printed for a cheap price.

  4. MUST BE VISIBLE SHRUNK DOWN!

This goes back to having a busy / simple logo. If you have to shrink it down for a flyer, business card, or even a button, if its busy, it wont be visible. It will look a hot mess. The goal is to be able to see it super small and super big!

  5. PLEASE NO SPECIAL EFFECTS INSIDE!!!!

I have seen a TON of “logo designers” do this. This is a personal rule for me. Having glitter, patterns, shine effects, or even imagery is NEVER a good idea for your logo. In my humble opinion, it makes the logo look tacky and cheap. I have given the client a special effect version, but I stress the importance of using the main flat version more!

  6. NO TAGLINES!!!

A logo is the stamp! Its not a story! Your logo should be the company name or the icon or both.. but NEVER taglines. Sure you can use taglines on websites and business cards, but for your MAIN logo, no.

  7. PNG IS A MUST!

Whats a “png” you ask? This is the file with no background. Nothing annoys me more than people watermarking their pics with a tacky ass box around it… this brings meto the next one.

  8. A LOGO NEEDS TO WORK ON A BLACK BACKGROUND!

If your logo has black in it, you should insist on paying extra to have the file that allows it to be used on a black background. The designer will likely have to change up the color way to accomplish this, but its very necessary.

  9. NEVER EVER USE CLICHE´ ASS CLIP ART!

Unless a customer asks me to, I try to stay away from the typical imagery that is flooded all over Google Images. Remember, the goal is to STAND OUT, not blend in. So, before you request the side profile of a woman with her lips and lashes and hair covering her face, understand, this has been done more than a million times. Same with scissors in a barbers logo. You get my point.

  10. DESIGN WHAT WILL ATTRACT YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE!

Too many times, people ask their family and friends for advice on their logo, instead of their target audience. NEVER ASK FRIENDS / FAMILY unless they are branding experts. They will always tell you its awesome… thats counterproductive! Your logo should represent your brand and have a touch of you in it, but remove your personal feelings and make sure it attracts the person spending money!

I hope these tips help, sorry for being long winded, but I am passionate about a good logo!

Good Luck
